2024 Week 32
Hello, Springers!
Have you ever heard of the band Weezer? I was reminded of one of their songs recently. It’s called “In the Garage.” The lyrics tell the story of the singer talking about things that are in his garage – a Dungeon Master’s Guide, some comic books, the poster for his favorite band, and his electric guitar.
The refrain of the song says:
In the garage,
I feel safe;
No one laughs about my ways.
In the garage,
Where I belong,
No one hears me sing this song.
It’s a favorite song of mine because it reminds me that everyone looks for and needs a place where they are safe. Where no one judges their half-formed ideas, silly jokes, or unique tastes. In my experience, this kind of place is especially important for men (think: Man Cave). But all of us, men and women, crave an ultimate place of safety.
This place of safety is what Psalm 18:2 means when it says “God is my rock in whom I take refuge.” Similarly Proverbs 18:10 says “The name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run into it and are saved.” In this refuge, in this tower, in this garage you are safe.
But it’s not talking about an actual building. It’s not talking about a church building. It’s talking about the name of God. The same Psalm 18:50 says that the Lord shows steadfast love to his annointed, to David and his offspring forever. The ultimate offspring of David is Christ – the one who died and rose for you. In Him, you have a true garage of safety.
Again, I think this is something especially needed for men. These things are on my mind this week as we prepare to start up new studies in the fall for men, women, and youth. Registrations open Sunday. I hope you will make time to come to our “garage” and find safety with others as we take refuge in Christ.
And if you have a favorite song that makes you think of this kind of safety (whether a hymn of the church or rock tune of the world) I’d love to know what it is! Tell me or email me.
in Christ,
Pastor Tag
